James Cameron’s “Avatar” keeps a hold on the number one spot as the film drops an unfathomable 14% in its seventh weekend of release, earns another $30 million and becomes the first film in box-office history to generate over $2 billion in worldwide revenue. This is all in a day’s work for this history-making juggernaut. The film is also on the verge of becoming the highest grossing film domestically of all-time, and is just $6 million away from surpassing “Titanic” and its $600.8 million North American total.
Here's the run-down of IMAX's 5th weekend of Avatar. The giant screen juggernaut generated another $6.0 mil domestically this weekend (-10%) on 179 screens; this represents approx 21% of the pictures overall domestic take. IMAX's domestic cumulative stands at $97 mil as of this evening and will surpass $100 mil this week.
Internationally, IMAX generated $4.3 mil (-3%) on 83 screens. As of Sunday night, the IMAX international cumulative will be $56 mil. This puts the global total as of tonight at approx $153 mil.
Worldwide All-Time Top 5 through Jan. 31:
Avatar - $2.039B and climbing
Titanic - $1.843B
LOTR: Return of the King - $1.129B
Pirates: Dead Man’s Chest - $1.061B
Dark Knight - $1.002B
Mel Gibson returns to a place in front of the camera after about eight years with Warner Bros. “Edge of Darkness,” which debuted with $17.12 million in second place and put him back in the familiar role of a major ass-kicking bad-ass.
Third place belongs to another newcomer, though one on the opposite end of the genre spectrum from the R-rated “Edge of Darkness,” with the romantic comedy “When in Rome” from Disney. The film earned $12.065 million in 2456 locations and featured two very likable stars in Josh Duhamel and Kristen Bell. The film had appeal to the date crowd and females and offered an alternative to the more serious fare in the marketplace.
Fourth place again goes to Dwayne Johnson as Fox’s “The Tooth Fairy” leaves yet another $10 million under the pillow and puts the film at $25.1 million in domestic revenue.
Finally fifth place goes to Warner Bros. “The Book of Eli” starring Denzel Washington. The film held well in its third weekend of release with another $8.8 in the collection plate and a domestic cumulative of nearly $75 million.
This was yet another eventful weekend as we posted only the second consecutive billion dollar January in box-office history and the industry prepares for Oscar nominations on Tuesday.
